Digital Works:
Short Stories
Crocodiles Cry in Moonlight, part of “The Chronicles of the
Children of the Chesapeake,” the back story of Anita Baker, an
animal rights activist who lives on a castle surrounded by a moat
filled with crocodottles because crocodiles eat human flesh and
crocodottles eat bananas.
The Immigrant and the Lady, a young immigrant and his family
lose everything in Vietnam. They fly to freedom as refugees and
learn the meaning of freedom while circling NYC.
Jesus Spreads Like Peanut Butter, from “The Chronicles of the
Children of the Chesapeake,” a back story from my serialized
novel Crocodiles Cry at Midnight. It tells the tale of Michael
Prince, an aspiring mime, clown and comedian, who falls in love
with Ginger Magoffin while sharing two-thirds of his egg roll at a
Chinese restaurant.
La Mer was a Writer’s Digest Competition Finalist in 2000. A man
loves seascapes so much that he tries to steal them all, until he
learns the devastating consequences of his actions.
My Heart Goes Out to You. Leroy is a fireman who, like Job of
the Bible, loses his job, his health and his wife, but his life changes
when he finds Jesus.
Nothing More Tragic. Myrtle Ann, an obstreperous three year-
old, believed she was the only important person in the Ferguson
household until the day something unmentionable happened and
changed her life forever.
One More Beer for the Christ Child, a back story from my
serialized novel Crocodiles Cry at Midnight about Suzi O’Brien
who was born on the wrong side of the tracks but grew up to
become a world famous tour guide, leading children from schools
to zoos all over the city of Washington. She was accused of murder
during the famous Corked episode at the Baker Family Castle, but
was ultimately exonerated. This collection also includes the bonus
story: If Only Rhoda’s Mom Hadn’t Dreamt of Mimes.
Pretty Plastic Flowers for Her Grave. A husband and a wife sit
alone in a barren cabin. Their little girl is dead—almost as dead as
their marriage. Now all they have going for them is a ninety-seven
cent bundle of plastic flowers, an car engine that won’t start, and a
lonely Christmas trip to the cemetery. (This will also will be
published by Ancient Paths Literary Magazine in December 2008).
Prince Charming and the Crocodile Drool, a back story from
my serialized novel Crocodiles Cry at Midnight. It tells the tale of
Alan Baker, a young man who, while trying to avoid the ignominy
of losing the Olympic gold medal to Ethiopian gymnast, Razz
Zermani, a three foot-four inch tall dwarf with a broken femur,
ended up inventing invisible ink made out of crocodile drool. Also
included are three bonus stories: The Hoot’n Toot’n Roller
Coaster Ride, Gooses and Mooses, and The HMS Aprilflower.
The Lost Grave. All was quiet in the cemetery until my mother
scrapped the mud off his nameplate: “This isn’t grandpa’s grave.
Someone has stolen Grandpa.”
The Ruler of the Elves. The children of Naples are disappearing.
Mussolini is unable to help and the Allies are still unable to take the
city. Only the elves and their ruler can rescue the children—and
that’s going to take some killing, some magic, and some major
artillery. “According to the Giornale de Napoli: “Hundreds of
children have disappeared in the past ten months and none has left
a footprint or a smile—It’s as if the earth, itself, has opened and
swallowed them all.”
The Tiger Cries at Midnight is an excerpt from The Last Free
Soul. The purpose of this story is to allow my patrons the
opportunity to read a short section of the novel before purchased
the entire novel.
The Trial is my first and only foray into writing science fiction. I
grew up reading sci-fi and fell in love with the works of Norton,
Wells and so many others. This story is written in the old fashioned
way, with a plot line and real characters—heavy on the fiction, light
on the science.
Two Faces of Evil, two men camp on a mystical mountain. Their
wives are left alone. One pair gets into mischief? The Other pair
dies. Only one pair, however, truly epitomizes evil.
Watched is a macabre tale about Charlie, a man whose career is on
the line. Either he performs his job by hiring enough able-bodied
security people to protect the corporation’s property or he gets
canned. Charlie may be an alcoholic, he may even be lazy—but the
uniqueness of his solution will totally delight you!
The World According to Boo. I wrote the initial six chapters of
Boo, the story of a magical hamster, in 1990 when I purchased my
first computer. I've posted it here for comments from my fans,
hoping that you will let me know if you'd like me to finish it, and if
you'd like to see more children's stories posted here.
